Hele Park, Newton Abbot

A local centre situated within a newly built residential development.

This is part of a wider master plan in Newton Abbot to create a commercial gateway into the residential development beyond. CWA were tasked with designing and delivering a retail centre to meet the needs of the newly welcomed nearby residents, providing a wide range of retail facilities, such as a convenience store and a veterinary centre. Furthermore, the development brings future investment into the local economy, creating up to 40 jobs.

The local centre comprises four units of various sizes, that front onto a 40-space car park.  Due to the challenging topography, the units sit below the main road, so it was important that the units had a strong visual prominence.

However, they needed to be visually restricted from behind, to mitigate any impact on neighbouring properties. Therefore, a rectangular, linear box with a mono-pitch roof, sloping from front to back meant that the units at the front were visually strong but visually unobtrusive at the rear.
